Restringing – when should you restring your tennis racquet?
It’s a question we are often asked…’when should I restring my tennis racquet?’
There are various factors that contribute to determining the frequency of restringing your tennis racquet, including how often you play, the type of strings you use, and your personal preference.
As a general guideline, it is recommended to restring your tennis racquet based on the following key points:
-
Play Frequency: If you play tennis frequently, multiple times per week, it makes sense to restring your racquet more often as string tension and performance tend to deteriorate faster with regular, intense play.
-
Duration: If you’ve been using the same strings for a long time, they will naturally lose tension and responsiveness, which will lead you to notice a decline in your racquet’s performance.
-
String Condition: Inspect your strings regularly for signs of wear and tear. If you notice fraying, notching, or significant loss of tension, it’s a clear indication that it’s time for a restring. Remember, weather conditions, which result in tennis ball wear and tear also come in to play when it comes to the condition of your strings.
-
Personal Preference: Some players are more sensitive to changes in string tension and performance than others. If consistent feel and responsiveness from your racquet is important, it would be worth considering a restring more frequently, even if there are no visible signs of wear.
As a general recommendation, intermediate to advanced players often restring their racquets every 3-4 months or every 30-50 hours of play. However, it’s essential to adjust this timeframe based on your own playing habits and preferences.
It’s worth consulting with a professional stringer who can assess the condition of your racquet strings and provide personalised recommendations based on your specific needs and playing style.
